As MASSIE’s Director of Controversy, Stephen specializes in audit risk assessment and quality review. His proficiency in navigating complex tax law makes him an essential resource in addressing tax technical challenges for clients. His extensive background includes a notable 32-year stint at the Internal Revenue Service (“IRS”), where he gained significant experience in tax controversy and audit procedures. In the six years immediately preceding his role at MASSIE, Stephen focused on delivering federal tax and audit consulting services to clients, assisting with compliance, managing audits, and providing strategic guidance in tax-related matters.
At the IRS, Stephen held various vital positions, enhancing his broad expertise in tax matters. He served as Territory Manager for businesses of all sizes, took on several roles in the national office, and was the Director of Field Operations for Engineering in the Large Business & International operating division. His tenure included a significant focus on research credits as an Executive Lead, where he gained experience in field enforcement for major U.S. companies.
Stephen holds a B.S.B.A. from Southeast Missouri State University. Outside of work, Stephen enjoys spending time with his family and friends, participating in community and church volunteer activities, hiking, and traveling across the United States.
